Traveling off the beaten path is a worthwhile endeavor. Avoiding over-developed “mega resort” towns means fewer crowds, a more authentic experience and lower prices for food, shopping and activities.
But finding an affordable flight into Puerto Escondido or Huatulco isn’t always as simple as plugging in the dates and clicking “purchase.”
In this guide we’ll walk you through a few of the ways you can uncover the best flight deals to come and discover this incredible part of the world.
A Simple Baseline for Price Comparison
Flights to the Oaxacan Coast will cost you a bit more than you’d pay to get to a larger hub like Cancun, Puerto Vallarta or Cabo. But those in the know understand that it’s money well spent.
On average flights from most of the United States run $700-$800 R/T depending on the season. You can use this figure as a guideline to compare the flights you find to what others normally pay.
Flights out of Houston or Chicago, United’s main hubs, tend to be slightly less, in particular from Houston since United runs direct flights from IAH to HUX.
Navigating United.com’s Flight Calendar
Shopping United flights can be slightly confusing since the airline’s Huatulco route is seasonal. Flights begin in November and run through early May with multiple flights per week during the high season of mid-December through March.
The best way to find affordable flights is to consult their flexible date calendar where you select a month and length of trip as opposed to searching for specific dates.
Here’s an example for searching a 6-day trip in January from Chicago:
Note that flights from the west coast tend to begin with a red eye flight, meaning you need to add 1 more day to the trip length as flights leave airports like Seattle, Portland or San Francisco before midnight.
Puerto Escondido or Huatulco?
While the majority of our guests fly into Huatulco, there are often better flight deals into Puerto Escondido, which is actually quite a bit closer to the resort.
In general Huatulco flights are less, but not always, so check both routes before making your final purchase.
United flies with partner airline AeroMar for the final Mexico City – Puerto Escondido leg or you can purchase separate tickets on any airline from your home airport to Mexico City and then on one of the domestic low-cost carriers down to the coast.

The Mexico City Stop-Over
There are several reasons to consider flying through Mexico City on your way to Gecko Rock:
- Save Money – Often the most affordable flight path is to get yourself to Mexico City first and then transfer to a domestic low-cost carrier.
- More Direct Path Unavailable – Some cities don’t offer convenient layovers via Houston so taking United all the way through isn’t an option.
- Mexico City is Awesome – Mexico’s vibrant capital is a vacation destination all by itself. Many of our guests plan a 2 or 3 day stop-over in Mexico City before/after their stay at Gecko Rock.
Oh, To Be Canadian
Westjet runs seasonal service to Huatulco from a number of Canadian cities at very affordable prices.
