The Ultimate Minimalist Packing Guide for a Mexico Vacation

what to pack puerto escondidoLike to skip the long lines at the baggage carousel and head straight for the taxi rank?

This post is for you.

Puerto Escondido Essentials: Don’t leave home without them.

Believe it or not, plenty of people get all the way to Gecko Rock Resort to find that they didn’t pack their sunglasses!

This might not seem like a big deal but the locals here don’t really wear sunglasses and so buying quality shades in town will cost a lot more than you pay at home.

Here are a few more things that need to go on your short list: debit/credit card, a few hundred dollars in cash (US$) for emergencies, passport, sunscreen, after sun lotion, and for the ladies, a swimsuit. Men can find plenty of decent board shorts in Puerto, but women know that shopping for swimwear can be complicated.

If you are a no-checked baggage kind of traveler, you can buy sunscreen and after sun lotion here, just bear in mind that they are a bit more spendy.

And if you’re wondering about beauty products and basic toiletries, the major supermarkets here will sell more or less all the same products you can get at home.

T-shirts and Hats for Souvenirs!

Instead of packing a bulky sun hat, just buy one at the market once you’re here. A basic sombrero won’t cost any more than 5 to 10 dollars.

The same goes for t-shirts. Why not pack light and pick up a few cheesy souvenir playeras on the Adoquín?

Flip-Flops & Teva’s: No other footwear required.

The thing about flip-flops is that in Mexico they go with pretty much anything. From a day at the beach to dinner at the fanciest restaurant in Puerto Escondido, flip-flops are the ultimate in versatile footwear.

If you plan on doing a lot of walking then a pair of sporty sandals might make it into your bag as well, but don’t worry about large hiking boots and leave your formal shoes at home.

Think about One Computer for your Group.

In the age of connectivity it might sound crazy to suggest that not every member of your party needs his/her own computer, but you’re coming to Mexico to relax and not to work.

Packing a single computer for everyone to share saves a lot of space in your bags and makes it easier to spend less time surfing the web and more time chilling out in paradise.
